Brexit – We are ready, are you?

5 Feb 2019

Ireland’s EU membership and the policy direction of Customs Union over the last 20 years has brought us to a situation where trading with the United Kingdom and any other member of the EU is very simple and straight forward. As we are all aware, Brexit will change this substantially.

In the event of a hard exit, the UK will become a “Third Country”. For anyone importing or exporting from/to the UK this will impact logistics and costs. All consignments imported from the UK will require a formal Import Customs Declaration. This is normally effected by a Customs Clearance Agent. Depending on the classification of goods for customs purposes, many consignments will also require Import VAT (standard rate 23%) and/or Duty paid to Revenue at location of entry (port or airport), prior to release of consignment. Simply put, there will be negative cash flow implications (Vat) and cost implications (non-reclaimable Duty) for any individual or company.

As a transport provider and customs broker to the cultural sector, Maurice Ward Art Handling deal with customs issues in relation to loans, touring exhibitions, permanent import and export of artwork on a regular basis.

Increased awareness and education of your responsibilities and how things work in the supply chain are advisable for a hard or soft exit. We recommend planning your Brexit by working closely with a qualified transport partner who also has a complete understanding of the customs process. Maurice Ward are one of Ireland’s longest established (1968) Customs Clearance agents and we are on hand to help with competitive customs clearance rates and compliance advice.

We are your one-stop customs experts:
