Metamorphosis – Tinka Bechert

Title of Exhibition
Die Verwandlung | Metamorphosis

Date

December 7, 2018 – February 13, 2019

Venue(s)

Galerie Gerken Berlin, Germany

Scope of work
In October of 2018, Maurice Ward Art Handling were approached by artist Tinka Bechert to arrange for the wrapping, collection and transportation of her artwork from Sligo to Berlin later in the year. The artworks would be part of an individual exhibition titled “Die Verwandlung | Metamorphosis” in Galerie Gerkin (Berlin, Germany). Maurice Ward Art Handling prepared and wrapped 46 paintings of various dimensions and 2 boxes of artworks for road transport in our climate-controlled and specialised truck to the UK. In the UK the works were given to our transport partner Hasenkamp who safely delivered the artworks through mainland Europe and on time for the exhibition in Germany.

‘Metamorphosis’ ended in mid-February and Maurice Ward Art Handling coordinated the collection and safe delivery back to Ireland. Part of this project included the storage of artworks returning to Ireland in our Dublin-based temperature control storage facility for a short-term period of 2 months. The artworks were then delivered by our art technicians and expert drivers to the artist’s studio in the West of the country.

Description of Exhibition
Tinka Bechert is a German born artist that lives and works in the West of Ireland and Berlin. Exhibiting since 2003, her work is represented in several private and public collections both in Ireland and abroad. She is represented by Galerie Gerken and has exhibited with them since 2014, in numerous group shows. In 2017, Tinka was offered a solo exhibition with her gallery. The exhibition ran from 7th December 2018 to 13th February 2019. Tinka applied to and received a Culture Ireland grant in the Summer 2018 for this exhibition. The funds were used to arrange the delivery and collection of artworks to and from Berlin.

For this exhibition, one of the focuses of her artistic practice was to upscale the size of her artworks and explore this larger format. She saw it as an opportunity to experiment and as a means to respond to a large exhibition space. This support from her gallery facilitated the development of her creative practice.

“Tinka Bechert’s solo exhibition Metamorphosis reflects on global and political change and how it affects people’s inner lives. Carefully constructed compositions of colour and form offer new insights into transformative processes, echoing the intricacies of contemporary life. The dilemma of moving between being and semblance propels the work forward, both in terms of its appearance and content. Organic plant-like shapes and fragments of the human body reach out from the work, erasing the boundaries between figurative and abstract painting.”

Testimonial

“This important professional opportunity was kindly supported by Culture Ireland who helped with the costs of shipping a large number of paintings to Germany. Maurice Ward Art Handling, transported the works and were very responsive, precise and flexible in working out suitable schedules and details which helped to ease off the pressure associated with the intensive run-up to this important solo-exhibition as an individual artist.”
